Description

This scholarly work by Brill examines the role of rare and exotic animals in the cultural self-fashioning and political imaging of the Medici court in Florence. Covering the period from their reign as Dukes of Florence (1532-1569) through their time as Grand Dukes of Tuscany (1569-1737), the book provides a deep look into how animals shaped the family's public image. The text starts with a study of global zoological collecting practices and the cultural uses of animals. It explores the Medici family's activities as collectors of exotic species, the establishment of their menageries, and how they used animals in court ceremonies and art. By connecting these activities to a wider global perspective, the book offers a detailed look at the intersection of nature, politics, and art in Renaissance and Baroque Florence.
