Description
This comprehensive revision of Professor Goodman's seminal work traces the profound Dutch influence on Japan during the 'closed centuries' between 1640 and 1853. Originally published in 1967 as The Dutch Impact on Japan, this updated edition incorporates extensive new research and reflects renewed scholarly interest in this pivotal period of Japanese history. Goodman examines the circumstances of the Dutch presence in seventeenth-century Japan and the historical and intellectual environment that fostered the development of 'Dutch studies'. The work details the Shogun government's initial fascination with European astronomy and medicine, charting how European knowledge gradually transformed Japanese intellectual life. This Bloomsbury Academic Collections edition provides essential reading for historians, students, and anyone seeking to understand the complex cross-cultural exchanges that shaped Japan during its period of isolation from the Western world.
