Description

Aid in Danger: The Perils and Promise of Humanitarianism offers a critical examination of the rising risks faced by humanitarian aid workers. As these professionals increasingly operate in violent contexts, they face growing threats of injury, kidnapping, and death. Larissa Fast investigates how aid organizations have responded to these dangers since 9/11 by fortifying their programs and staff against outside threats. Drawing on more than a decade of research, this book explores the causes of violence against aid workers and the consequences of the protective measures used by agencies. Part of the Pennsylvania Studies in Human Rights series, this work analyzes the assumptions behind current explanations of violence and the effectiveness of existing responses in the field.
