Karl Mikolka was one of the great riding masters of our time. Educated at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, where he rose through the ranks to Oberbereiter — Chief Rider — he spent a lifetime as both teacher and student: a clinician of uncanny insight who never stopped learning from the horse in front of him, or from the old masters who came before. Before coming to America, he spent four years building a dressage program in Brazil, coaching that nation's Olympic team. After settling in the United States in 1972, Karl became a driving force in the growth of American dressage: a founding member of the USDF in 1973 and a 2003 inductee into its Hall of Fame, a nationally accredited judge from the mid-1970s onward who sat on the panels of several U.S. Olympic dressage selection trials, director of training for the Tempel Lipizzans, and passionate teacher and clinician to a generation of students including George Williams, Cindy Sydnor, Carole Grant, and Belinda Nairn-Wertman. From My Perspective gathers Karl's writings from across five decades: lessons written after clinics and private sessions, published articles, issues of his newsletter Inspiration, personal memoirs, and the meticulous exercise charts he always hoped to see in print. Inside these three volumes you will find: · Fresh, stimulating exercises that keep both horse and rider mentally engaged, breaking the monotony of rote schooling while working steadily toward the classical goals of balance, straightness, and harmony. · Insight into the "why" behind the aids, so you refine your timing, feel, and responsibility rather than simply adding pressure or repetition. · Dozens of Karl's brilliant working patterns and diagrams, showing exactly where to ride and how to use geometry to diagnose and improve your horse's way of going. · Excerpts from Karl's journals, chronicling his training of the stallion Neapolitano Alea I during his years at the Spanish Riding School.
