Description

Dawn of the Lost Civilisation is a 74,502-word interdisciplinary investigation into whether conventional archaeology has underestimated the organisation, technology and connectivity of prehistoric north-west Europe. The book re-examines Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic populations traditionally grouped as Cro-Magnon, considering stature, skeletal robustness, cranial form, diet, technology and behaviour. It argues that these people were not simply primitive hunter-gatherers but capable populations operating systems of hunting, engineering, measurement, transport and knowledge transmission. At the centre of the argument is Doggerland, the vast prehistoric landscape that once connected Britain with continental Europe beneath the North Sea. Seabed mapping, buried rivers, peat, pollen, animal remains and human artefacts establish that this was once a productive, inhabited environment. The book proposes that Doggerland was not merely a land bridge, but the centre of a wider north-west European system. From this develops the main hypothesis: that prehistoric Europe possessed a highly mobile, water-based civilisation whose infrastructure consisted mainly of rivers, estuaries, wetlands and coastlines. The long-distance movement of amber, jade, obsidian, flint and later metals is used to demonstrate extensive exchange networks. Boats and waterways, rather than roads, are presented as the key to how people, materials and ideas travelled. This leads to a functional reinterpretation of monuments normally described as ceremonial, ritual or defensive. Dykes are examined as possible hydraulic or transport corridors; henges and stone circles as systems of measurement and exchange; hillforts as aggregation and distribution centres; and long barrows as mortuary structures that may also have marked routes. Stonehenge plays a central role. Its geometry, Aubrey Holes, landscape position and hydrological setting are examined as evidence for measurement and environmental prediction. Lunar observation and tidal knowledge are proposed as practical tools for a society dependent on waterways. The book then turns to Plato. Rather than beginning with Atlantis and searching for a location, it first reconstructs the prehistoric system and asks whether Plato’s description resembles it. Doggerland is compared with his account of a large fertile territory beyond the Mediterranean, extensive waterways, maritime power, resource extraction, flooding and a shallow, muddy sea remaining after destruction. Particular attention is given to Plato’s date of roughly 9600 BCE and his unusual description of a sea obstructed by mud and shoals. These are compared with the post-glacial transformation of the North Sea basin and the drowned landscape around Dogger Bank. The book does not claim that Doggerland has been proven to be Atlantis. Instead, it argues that the cumulative correspondence is sufficient to treat the idea as a testable historical hypothesis rather than dismissing it as mythology. Finally, the term Homo Superior is introduced not as a new species, but as a functional description of a cognitive profile based on pattern recognition, memory, spatial reasoning, system-building and technological problem-solving. Oral tradition, cave art, mathematics and neurodiversity are explored as possible ways complex knowledge could be preserved without writing. Supported by 289 chapter reference entries, Dawn of the Lost Civilisation ultimately proposes that before conventional agricultural civilisation, north-west Europe may already have supported an organised maritime society whose centre was lost beneath the North Sea.
