Description

Rust - The Good Parts A First Programming Course in Rust by Iyalla John Alamina Overview Computer programming doesn't have to be so hard. Rust — The Good Parts is a first programming course that uses Rust as its language from page one, assuming no prior programming experience and making no apology for choosing a systems language to teach absolute beginners. The book follows a two-course-meal structure. Part 1 - 100 Pages to Rust (Chapters 1–4) takes a complete beginner through data, decisions and loops, functions and modules, and finally ownership, testing, and a terminal UI - ending with a playable TicTacToe game built by the reader's own hands, in about a month of part-time evening study. Part 2 -Rust for Good (Chapters 5–11) goes further: structs, collections, error handling, traits, closures, generics, and lifetimes, culminating in a second, richer capstone - a TouchTyping tutor built from scratch in the Bevy game engine. Two project threads run continuously through both parts, so the reader experiences how real code grows as their knowledge grows, rather than starting a fresh throwaway example in every chapter. The book has a second, quieter purpose: it maps universal programming best practices the kind senior engineers spend a career accumulating to the exact point where the Rust compiler enforces them. A reader who finishes the book has not only learned Rust; they have absorbed a professional engineering discipline, because the language made it impossible to avoid. Who This Book Is For The complete beginner. No prior programming experience assumed. Chapter 1 starts at "what is a program." The programmer from another language (Python, JavaScript, Java, Go). Moves quickly through Chapters 1–2, slows down deliberately at ownership in §4.3, where Rust stops resembling what they already know. Someone who tried Rust before and bounced off the borrow checker. This book addresses the borrow checker directly using a three-permission model (read, write, own) adapted from the Brown University Rust course - a visual approach to building the required mental model. No computer science degree, no knowledge of C or C++, and no prior exposure to pointers or manual memory management is assumed. Those concepts are introduced from scratch, only when the book needs them. Companion source code: github.com/JohnAPedagogy/rust-the-good-parts
