Description

Designing a spacecraft one subsystem at a time is straightforward. Designing one where every subsystem's decisions are coupled to every other subsystem's constraints — where a battery shortfall discovered late in the power analysis has to be traced back through the mass budget and forward into thermal margins — is a different and much harder skill, and it is rarely taught as directly as it is practiced. Many engineering references present spacecraft structures, thermal control, power, attitude control, propulsion, and communications as separate, self-contained topics. That approach can leave readers able to perform an individual calculation correctly while still struggling with the more realistic problem: recognizing when a finding in one subsystem should reopen a decision made in another, and keeping a single requirement traceable from its origin as a stakeholder need all the way through to its final physical verification. This book addresses that gap directly. Rather than treating each subsystem in isolation, it develops one continuous, numerically worked spacecraft design — a hypothetical Earth-observation satellite constellation — from the opening chapter's mission framing through a closing chapter's end-of-life disposal verification. A finding uncovered early in the book is shown driving a decision made many chapters later, and every subsequent subsystem chapter's sizing work is reconciled against that decision's mass, power, and cost budgets. Across fifteen chapters, readers will be able to: Elicit and write verifiable, traceable requirements and manage a requirements verification matrix Perform core orbital mechanics calculations — orbital elements, transfer maneuvers, perturbations, and ground-track coverage geometry — and run a mission architecture trade study Size and verify major subsystems against a shared mass and power budget: structures (launch loads, buckling, modal analysis), thermal control (thermal balance, passive/active hardware, margin), electrical power (solar array and battery sizing, degradation), attitude determination and control (sensor/actuator selection, reaction wheel sizing, pointing error budgets), propulsion (the rocket equation, delta-v budgeting), and communications (link budget, data-rate/margin trades) Sequence an integration, assembly, test, and verification campaign, and interpret it against a verification cross-reference matrix Quantify reliability using MTBF and reliability block diagrams, build a failure modes and effects analysis, and maintain a risk register Plan mission operations, ground segment support, and a compliant end-of-life disposal sequence Where the worked example uncovers a genuine finding — an underestimated battery capacity, an assumption later corrected by test, a compliance question left open for several chapters — that finding is carried forward honestly rather than smoothed over, because catching this kind of issue early is one of the most consistent lessons the book returns to. This book is written for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students of aerospace and systems engineering, and for practicing engineers who want a single, coherent reference spanning the full spacecraft development lifecycle. It assumes familiarity with undergraduate physics and mathematics through differential equations, and develops every spacecraft-specific concept from first principles.
