This is Volume 1 of the 2-volume set of Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, first published in 1516 and revised into its final form in 1532. The work is one of the defining achievements of the European Renaissance: a vast, intricately woven romance-epic that both inherits and transforms the chivalric tradition. Continuing the narrative begun in Matteo MariaBoiardo’s Orlando innamorato, which was left unfinished on the author’s death in 1494, Ariosto creates a world in which Carolingian knights, Saracen warriors, sorcerers, monsters and lovers move through a landscape shaped by both medieval legend and humanist wit. At the poem’s centre lies the madness of Orlando, driven to frenzy by Angelica’s rejection. But Ariosto’s narrative continually spirals outward into dozens of interlaced narratives: the love of Ruggiero and Bradamante, the exploits of Astolfo on the Moon, the enchantments of Alcina, and countless digressions that range from the comic to the sublime. The poem’s distinctive tone—by turns ironic, tender, sceptical, and exuberant—marks it as a work that both celebrates and satirises the ideals and splendours of chivalry.
