ASTROBOTANY (Volume 1): Plants Beyond Earth Plant Life, Space Agriculture & Future of Human Survival Beyond Earth

ASTROBOTANY: Plants Beyond Earth – Volume 1 Author, Surendra Ramesh Sawardekar & Dr. Urmila Sarkar ASTROBOTANY: Plants Beyond Earth – Volume 1 is a scientific exploration of how plants can sustain human life beyond Earth through space agriculture, bio-regenerative systems and extraterrestrial ecology. The book introduces readers to the emerging interdisciplinary field of astrobotany, which integrates botany, space biology, environmental science and aerospace technology to address one of humanity’s greatest future challenges: survival in space. Beginning with the foundations of astrobotany, the book explains the importance of plants in long-duration missions to the Moon, Mars and deep-space habitats. It highlights how plants contribute not only to food production, oxygen generation and water recycling, but also to psychological well-being in confined space environments. The text presents a detailed historical overview of space plant research, tracing developments from early rocket experiments and Soviet biosatellites to advanced studies aboard the International Space Station. It discusses major contributions from organizations such as NASA, ISRO and the European Space Agency in advancing space agriculture and controlled ecological systems. A major focus of the book is the effect of microgravity on plant structure and physiology. The authors explain how the absence of gravity alters root and shoot orientation, cellular organization, hormone distribution and photosynthesis. Through scientifically detailed yet accessible explanations, the book examines plant adaptations involving phototropism, hydrotropism, stress-response genes and antioxidant mechanisms that enable survival in extraterrestrial environments. The book further explores technological innovations such as hydroponics, aeroponics, LED-based growth systems, automated growth chambers and AI-assisted farming systems designed for sustainable crop production in space. Experimental studies conducted aboard the International Space Station are discussed in depth, including successful cultivation of lettuce, wheat, radish, zinnia and Arabidopsis thaliana. These experiments demonstrate the feasibility of self-sustaining plant systems for future planetary colonization. Combining scientific rigor with futuristic vision, ASTROBOTANY: Plants Beyond Earth – Volume 1 serves as an essential resource for students, researchers, educators and science enthusiasts interested in astrobiology, space agriculture and the future of human survival beyond Earth. The book emphasizes sustainability, innovation and the indispensable role of plants in shaping extraterrestrial civilization.
