Description

These volumes contain transcribed and scanned copies of documents and letters discovered in the attic when the old home at "River View" near Cricket Hill, built in Mathews County in tidewater Virginia during the early part of the 19th century, was torn down. The letters and documents are those of the Hudgins and related enslaver families, descendants of the Declaration of Independence Signer Carter Braxton, and describe the lives and times of these families in ante-bellum, Civil War, Reconstruction, and "Jim Crow" eras in tidewater Virginia. Additionally, the genealogies of Braxton, Carter, Corbin, Gwyn, Hudgins, Kirwan, Hunley, Tayloe, and Yeatman families are presented.
