From minds the argument moves to societies. Every stable society is a meaning-technology: institutions, rituals, and narratives that generate significance at population scale. When that machinery erodes, what follows is quieter than collapse — exhaustion, cynicism, and a slow retreat into private meaning that cannot sustain a civilisation. The book calls this the unnoticed end, because it does not look like collapse. It looks like Tuesday. Its central case study is the Roman Republic: the long stability of the mos maiorum, its dissolution, and the Augustan reconstruction that made the old values feel true again. The same dynamics are operating now, faster, with AI accelerating them. From this material the book develops a formal model of narrative entropy — the title takes negentropy from Schrödinger's What Is Life? (1944) — and specifies the conditions under which the model would be wrong. Its central prediction: a free, technologically advanced civilisation cannot return to low narrative entropy. The open question is whether it can learn to function at entropy levels that would have broken every society before it. The complete edition (22 chapters, five appendices, full references) makes the case in Book One, follows its consequences in Book Two, and states the falsification conditions in Part Three.
