Calling in the Ancestors: Tending the Soul at the Roots

What happens when the ancestors stop whispering and start demanding to be unburied? Calling in the Ancestors is a journey through the bloodlines of the American South—a spiritual excavation of the stories we were never meant to tell. Who are the ones who didn’t fit? The ones who wandered, the ones who were silenced, and the ones who held the stories that no one else dared to tell? In this deeply personal and meticulously researched archival journey, Lily Swan invites readers to look beneath the surface of the family tree to find the "Outliers"—the ancestral spirits whose lives were often sidelined by history, but whose legacies form the very bedrock of the soul. Moving beyond simple genealogy, Calling in the Ancestors: Tending the Soul at the Roots is a meditative exploration of what it means to truly tend to one’s roots. Through a unique blend of narrative history, psychological insight, and spiritual reflection, this book seeks to heal the disconnect between our modern lives and the stories of those who came before us. Within these pages, you will find: A Visual Archive: Over 160 rare archival images, photographs, and documents that bring the ghosts of the past into the light of the present. The Search for the "Missing": A focused look at the family members who existed on the fringes—the dreamers, the rebels, and the "outliers" who provide the most profound lessons in resilience. Soul Work: Practical guidance on how to bridge the gap between historical data and ancestral connection, turning a family history into a living, breathing practice of soul-tending. This is more than a history book; it is a call to remember. It is an invitation to sit with the forgotten voices of your own lineage and discover that the roots we often ignore are the very ones that hold the power to sustain us. Perfect for readers of memoirs, ancestral healing, and deep-dive American history.
