This book offers a fresh and compelling portrait of Uam Song Si-yeol (尤庵 宋時烈,1607-1689), one of the most influential-and controversial-thinkers of the Joseon dynasty. Often remembered as a rigid defender of orthodoxy or a factional political hardliner, Song emerges here in a far more complex light. Drawing closely on the Songja Daejeon (宋子大全) and related court lectures, memorials, and correspondence, this study reveals a thinker for whom textual scholarship, moral cultivation, and political responsibility were inseparable. Across debates on ritual, philosophy, and governance, Song consistently returned to enduring questions: How should the mind be disciplined? How can moral principle guide political speech? And how can integrity survive within volatile institutions? By reading his writings across genres rather than isolating them into "politics" or "philosophy," this book uncovers a coherent intellectual vision shaped by crisis, controversy, and ultimate sacrifice. More than a biography, it is an exploration of moral authority under pressure-and a study of how principle seeks to inhabit power without being distorted by it. Uam Song Si-yeol (尤庵 宋時烈, 1607–1689): Uam, writing in a highly contentious intellectual climate, became the leading defender of Yulgok’s legacy and of orthodox Zhu Xi learning. He was a prolific writer and a fierce participant in doctrinal debates. His moral and political commitments were uncompromising, and he came to embody for many the determination to maintain Confucian orthodoxy in an era marked by factional strife. This is the fifth volume from the Korean Neo-Confucian Masters Series has emerged from a long-standing sense that the intellectual achievements of Korean Confucianism deserve fuller recognition within global scholarship than they have thus far received. While studies of Song–Ming (宋明) Confucianism in China, and of its diverse reinterpretations in Japan, have accumulated over many decades, the Korean tradition—despite its remarkable subtlety and sustained philosophical creativity—has often remained at the margins of broader academic discussions. The present series aims, in a modest but deliberate way, to redress that imbalance. It introduces seven thinkers whose works not only defined the contours of Joseon intellectual life (朝鮮, 1392–1910) but also contributed to the wider development of East Asian philosophy.
