Description

The Silence of Shambhala In the winter of 2001, Susan Sharadon, an award-winning investigative journalist from New York, arrives in Srinagar, Kashmir. She has come to investigate one of the most controversial legends in human history — that Jesus of Nazareth survived the crucifixion and lies buried in a modest shrine known as the Roza Bal Tomb. To the world, it is folklore; to Susan, it is the story that could redefine faith itself. Guided by Farooq Qadri, a young local historian, she journeys through snow-covered valleys and forgotten monasteries, tracing fragments of a lost narrative that binds East and West. But her quest soon attracts unwanted attention. Mohammad Shafi Zargar, a shrewd police officer in Srinagar, arrests her on suspicion of espionage. Her notes, tapes, and photographs — containing evidence of something extraordinary — are confiscated. As war brews at India’s borders and militancy grips Kashmir, Susan is deported, her story silenced. Years pass. Twelve years later, in 2013, Susan reemerges — older, gentler, but haunted. Now living in New York, she has converted to Buddhism and married Tenzin Norbu, a Tibetan scholar at Columbia University. Together they have two children and a quiet life built upon acceptance, not ambition. Yet when Tenzin travels to Dharamshala for the Kalachakra ceremony, the world of secrecy and faith that once consumed Susan returns violently. Tenzin is found dead in a McLeod Ganj hotel, his death staged as suicide. Among his belongings, Susan discovers cryptic maps and coded letters hinting that Tenzin was part of a secret Buddhist sect guarding the path to Shambhala — the mythical city hidden beyond the Himalayas. The documents reveal another layer of conspiracy: a Vatican society, formed after a lost manuscript was found twenty years earlier, believes Shambhala was founded by Jesus himself after the crucifixion — a place where his descendants still live. Grief turns into obsession. Susan begins planning her return to India, telling her family she is going to Goa, but secretly heading back to Kashmir. She reunites with Farooq Qadri, now a fugitive, and together they follow Tenzin’s trail — through the desolate passes of Ladakh, Hemis Monastery, and towards the hidden valleys near the China border. Unknown to her, Zargar — now a Superintendent of Police — has long guarded her confiscated files and suspects she will return. In September 2014, catastrophic floods engulf Kashmir. Amid the chaos, all forces converge: Susan, Farooq, Zargar, and the Vatican agents sent to reclaim the ancient maps. As waters rise and the city drowns, truth and myth finally meet — revealing not a place, but a state of awakening that Shambhala truly represents. The novel closes with Susan disappearing into the mountains, her fate unknown, leaving behind only her final words in a recovered journal: “Faith is not found in the tombs of the dead, but in the silence of those who keep searching.”
