Description
In our modern world, which continues to change with unprecedented complexity and speed, we navigate a vast ocean of information and diverse values. In this journey, we sometimes lose our compass, struggling to find our footing and determine the right direction to take. It is the aim of this book to demonstrate that in such an age, a Buddhist disciplinary code compiled over two millennia ago can serve as a surprisingly fresh and practical source of wisdom. This profound collection of disciplines was born in the process of systematizing the Buddha's teachings among his disciples after his parinirvāṇa. As Indian Buddhism evolved and branched into various schools, this text, the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, was meticulously preserved and transmitted by the Dharmaguptaka school. This wisdom traveled eastward along the Silk Road, and in the early 5th century, during the Later Qin dynasty, it was translated into Chinese. The translation was accomplished through the oral recitation of the monk Buddhayaśas from Kashmir, which was then transcribed by Zhu Fonian. This Chinese version of the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya (Shibunritsu in Japanese) went on to become the cornerstone of monastic discipline in China, Korea, and Japan, profoundly shaping the spiritual culture of East Asia for over a thousand years. The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya is no mere list of prohibitions. It is a grand collection of case studies, formulated to address the pragmatic challenge of how to maintain the "Sangha"—the community of ordained Buddhist practitioners—in a state of peace and harmony. It is a "record of dialogue," documenting how the Buddha and his disciples meticulously confronted and sought solutions to the universal problems that arise wherever people gather: interpersonal conflicts, disputes over possessions, and disagreements in organizational management. Contained within is a timeless wisdom for harmonizing individual inner growth with the collective well-being of the group. The Vinaya eloquently tells us that discipline is not meant to bind us. Rather, it is the very foundation that liberates us from unnecessary confusion and conflict, allowing us to attain true freedom and peace of mind. The primary goal of this volume is to resurrect this historically and culturally significant text, long the domain of specialized scholarship, in clear and accessible modern language. I am confident that not only those with an interest in Buddhism, but also organizational leaders, community managers, and indeed anyone wishing to build better human relationships, will discover concrete and valuable insights for navigating modern life within this ancient wisdom. It is my sincerest hope that this book will serve as a humble aid for each reader in cultivating their own inner tranquility and fostering warmer, more compassionate relationships with others.
