Description

Toegye Yi Hwang (1501–1570) was one of the most influential thinkers in the formation of Korean Neo-Confucianism and a central figure in the broader intellectual history of East Asia. Renowned for his rigorous engagement with the Cheng–Zhu tradition, he developed a distinctive philosophical voice that shaped Korean Confucian discourse for centuries and continues to inform contemporary interpretations of moral cultivation and metaphysical inquiry. This volume examines the life, writings, and philosophical orientation of Toegye Yi Hwang within the intellectual and political context of mid-Joseon Korea. It focuses on his sustained reflection on the relationship between principle (理) and vital force (氣), his careful articulation of moral psychology, and his efforts to clarify the structure of self-cultivation through learning, reverence, and introspection. Particular attention is given to his interpretation of classical texts and his role in refining Neo-Confucian orthodoxy through critical dialogue rather than doctrinal rigidity. Grounded in close readings of primary classical sources, the book reconstructs Toegye’s philosophical framework with close attention to textual nuance and historical circumstance. Rather than presenting a general overview, it offers a systematic interpretation of his thought, situating his arguments within ongoing debates in Neo-Confucian metaphysics and ethical theory. Written for scholars, graduate students, and serious readers of East Asian philosophy, this volume illuminates the enduring significance of Toegye Yi Hwang and clarifies his place within the global history of Confucian thought. The Korean Neo-Confucian Masters Series presents a scholarly introduction to seven major thinkers of Joseon-era Korea, examining their lives, intellectual systems, and historical significance for a global academic readership. Although Confucian traditions are often discussed primarily through Chinese and Japanese lineages, Korean Neo-Confucianism developed distinctive philosophical trajectories that shaped ethical thought, political reasoning, and educational ideals across the Joseon period. This series brings those traditions into focus through close study of seven representative figures whose thought defined Korean intellectual life from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. Each volume is grounded in careful readings of primary classical texts and informed by rigorous intellectual-historical scholarship and comparative philosophical analysis. Rather than offering introductory summaries, the series reconstructs each thinker’s conceptual framework, situates it within broader Neo-Confucian discourse, and examines its relevance to ongoing discussions in moral philosophy, political philosophy, and intellectual history. Written for scholars, graduate students, and serious readers of East Asian philosophy, the series maintains a balance between academic rigor and clarity of exposition. Taken together, the volumes aim to reposition Korean Neo-Confucianism within global intellectual history and to demonstrate its enduring philosophical significance beyond regional or national boundaries.
