This workbook was developed to support the course Designing for Materials, Manufacturing, and Assembly (MET 201), a core applied design course in Engineering Technology programs. The material reflects the realities faced by engineering technicians who must design components and assemblies that are not only functional, but also manufacturable, assemblable, and economically viable within modern industrial environments. Unlike traditional design texts that emphasize theory in isolation, this book is intentionally practical. Students learn to create part geometry that supports efficient production and reliable assembly while adhering to accepted industrial practices, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Throughout the text, design choices are evaluated in terms of downstream consequences, tooling complexity, material waste, assembly time, automation compatibility, and quality control. This book also integrates the use of DFMA analysis software and digital design tools, mirroring the collaborative environments found in industry. Students are guided through evaluating their designs using both manual reasoning and software-based analysis, comparing alternatives and justifying decisions based on measurable criteria. Emphasis is placed on understanding how designs perform under manual, semi-automated, and high-speed robotic assembly conditions, preparing students for both current and emerging manufacturing systems. Hands-on learning is central to this course and to this text. Students are expected to translate digital designs into physical or simulated prototypes using appropriate manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, injection molding, casting, and forging, with material selection driven by functional requirements and process compatibility. Laboratory activities reinforce the idea that good design is inseparable from how a product is made and assembled. This textbook is intended for engineering technicians, technologists, and students in Engineering Technology programs who are preparing to enter manufacturing, quality, automation, and product development roles.
