Q for Mortals (Fourth Edition) is a thorough presentation of the q programming language and an introduction to the kdb+ database in which the content of the third edition has been updated and extended to cover through release 4.1. It is a tutorial in q programming presented through myriad code snippets and worked examples. New or expanded features covered in depth in the fourth edition include: dictionary definition syntax; pattern matching (including type checking/coercion for functions); memory mapping; debugging; views; function composition. Two commonly requested changes are also reflected in this edition: the full results of all snippets are displayed and relative paths are used when presenting kdb+. The terminology and presentation have been made consistent with the KX web site whenever feasible. Finally, many typos, fontos and errors have been corrected. All code in the text has been executed and checked with the current release of kdb-x, the integrated release of q/kdb+ that is now available free to programmers from KX. The cover displays the Unalome, an ancient symbol from Buddhist and Hindu traditions representing the tortuous journey to enlightenment. The dots at the end symbolize Nirvana or spiritual perfection.
