Description

THE HISTORY OF THE COLD WAR Ideology, Power, and the Global Struggle for Supremacy The History of the Cold War offers a sweeping and authoritative narrative of the defining geopolitical confrontation of the second half of the twentieth century. Emerging from the ruins of the Second World War, the Cold War was not a pause between conflicts but a new kind of system: a bipolar world structured by nuclear deterrence, ideological rivalry, competing alliances, and proxy wars fought from Korea to Angola, from Vietnam to Afghanistan. It reordered borders and economies, shaped decolonization and development, and left behind institutions and fault lines that continue to influence global politics into the twenty-first century. This volume traces the Cold War with clarity and depth, beginning with the fragile “new world order” of 1945–1949 and the division of Europe into Western and Soviet spheres. It examines the emergence of rival blocs, the Berlin crises, the creation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact, and the early nuclear arms race that transformed strategy and statecraft. As the narrative moves through the 1950s and 1960s, it explores the Korean War, the Cuban Revolution, the missile crisis, and the war in Vietnam—conflicts in which local struggles became entangled with superpower calculations and ideological campaigns. The story then widens to encompass decolonization and the rise of the so-called Third World as both arena and actor. Anti-colonial revolutions, non-aligned diplomacy, and regional wars in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America reveal a Cold War that was never simply “East versus West,” but a tangled web of aspirations and interventions. Espionage, psychological warfare, and propaganda form a shadow layer to this history, as intelligence agencies, covert operations, and cultural diplomacy sought to win hearts and minds as much as territory. The Space Race, arms control efforts, and successive cycles of confrontation and détente illustrate how science, technology, and diplomacy both intensified and constrained the conflict. In its later chapters, the book turns to the period of structural fatigue and transformation from the 1970s through the 1990s. It analyzes the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the renewed confrontation of the Reagan era, and the rise of movements such as Solidarity that eroded the legitimacy of communist rule in Eastern Europe. Gorbachev’s reforms—perestroika and glasnost—are presented within a broader context of economic stagnation, national tensions, and shifting global power balances that made the old Cold War order increasingly untenable. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the revolutions of 1989, and the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 mark not just the end of a particular rivalry, but the opening of a new, uncertain world. Drawing on political, diplomatic, military, social, and cultural history, this volume portrays the Cold War as more than a sequence of crises and summits: it was a lived condition that shaped everyday life from Washington to Moscow, from Warsaw and Havana to Delhi, Cairo, and Johannesburg. It explores how the conflict was imagined in film, literature, and art; how it is remembered in museums and monuments; and how its legacies remain contested across nations and generations. Together with The History of the Soviet Union – Revolution, Empire, and the Red Century, this book illuminates a global century in which ideology, power, and fear combined to redefine the possibilities—and dangers—of modern world order.
