The History of a Steel Legend The M1 Abrams tank is a true icon of American engineering. Production began in 1980, and the vehicle itself was named after General Creighton Abrams, the charismatic commander of the 37th Armored Battalion, who fought during World War II and later became the leader of the American forces in Vietnam. It was created to fight the armored forces of the Soviet Union. However, it saw combat primarily in conflicts in the Middle East.
