The History of the British Phantom In the 1960s, after the cancellation of the ambitious British fighter projects TSR-2 and P.1154, Great Britain decided to purchase American F-4 Phantom II aircraft. These machines were specially adapted to the needs of the Royal Navy and the RAF and received the designations FG.1 (F-4K) and FGR.2 (F-4M). British Phantoms differed from the American versions.
