Description

This is volume three of a three-volume series. With over 500 beautiful posters, this book is sure to appeal to circus enthusiasts as well as poster aficionados. This book provides a brief history of the lithograph and the early periods of the circus. The focus of this book is to briefly address some of the complexities and nuances of the circus. The circus, as we remember it, performed during times of war and during a period when society was much different than it is today. As such, the circus benefited and suffered from the effects of war and the social norms during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The posters in this volume are centered on lesser-known circuses and performers. The posters within this book will provide the reader with a comprehensive set of posters from circuses from 1840 through 2016. During this period, some of the best artists and commercial printing companies were designing posters to capture the public’s attention and to promote the circus. With many of the images, there is a brief summary about the circus, its owners, and some of the top circus performers of the day. The reader will find this book to be informative with an incredible collection of beautiful circus photos.
