Description

Foreword To read the poems of Paul Anthony Cook is to be transported to a defining moment in London’s cultural history—the vibrant, gritty, and creatively explosive 1980s. This collection is more than a series of verses; it is a time capsule, offering a direct line into the heart of an artist at the epicentre of a musical and poetic renaissance. The energy suffusing these pages was forged in a crucible of intense artistic endeavour, when Paul was a founding member of the band Sade. His contributions during those formative years helped sculpt a new, sophisticated sound that would become a cornerstone of the neo-soul genre. These poems are the offspring of that era—born from late nights in smoke-filled clubs, a spirit of relentless creation, and a community building new worlds from guitar chords and well-turned phrases. This distinctive voice did not emerge from a vacuum. From the beginning, Paul was drawn to the literary rebels of the Beat Generation. Their spirit of restless travel, raw emotional honesty, and lyrical improvisation courses through his work—an influence made explicit when he named an early band The First Third, after the autobiographical work by Neal Cassady. This was a clear declaration of artistic allegiance. Moving to Stoke Newington at seventeen, he immersed himself in a milieu where this bohemian literary tradition collided with the burgeoning post-punk and new wave scene. The poems in this collection are the direct output of that unique fusion. They are reflections scribbled in notebooks between rehearsals, lyrical ideas honed in the studio, and the existential musings of a young man navigating the twin intoxications of art and life. In verses like "Hangover Square," "Late Nights," and "Soul for Sale," we feel the texture of that existence—the exhilaration, melancholy, ambition, and weariness. "Black Musician" offers a poignant commentary on the era's cultural landscape, while the searching quality of "Message in a Melody" speaks to a perpetual quest for meaning. While this collection cements Paul Anthony Cook’s legacy as a poet of 1980s London, it is but one facet of a broader creative life. He is an author who has chronicled his experiences in the music industry and penned compelling short novels such as Eden 12 and Finlay Barnard and the Tale of the Disappearing Children. His multidisciplinary talent is further evidenced by his work with the BBC, including the 2003 "Telling Lives" project in his former hometown of Hornsea. His video piece, ‘Reflections,’ is now archived in the Bradford Photography Museum. Yet here, in these pages, we meet the artist at the source. These poems capture the raw material before it was shaped into song and story. They are immediate, intimate, and alive with the sound of a singular voice finding its pitch. This is an essential record of a time, a place, and a feeling, penned by a true chronicler of the creative spirit. Prepare to be transported.
