La reforma en la asistencia psiquiátrica que tiene lugar en España en el inicio de la década de 1970 implicó cambios profundos en el ámbito de la Salud Mental. Este proceso fue liderado por una generación de jóvenes profesionales que abrió una nueva perspectiva y un nuevo camino; psiquiatras y psicólogos clínicos que se distinguieron, durante el final del franquismo y en la Transición por sus aportaciones transformadoras de la paupérrima asistencia psiquiátrica existente y la búsqueda de prácticas superadoras del hospital psiquiátrico y para la construcción de una red de servicios de Salud Mental comunitaria. Conocedores de las ideas y las acciones impulsadas por destacados profesionales de otros países europeos, tales como Basaglia, Cooper, Tosquelles, Castel, entre otros, aportando tanto desde su propia y singular reflexión como desde los intercambios y debates sobre el cómo de las acciones, desarrollaron cambios muy relevantes en la atención pública y formación en Salud Mental. Sus apuestas en materia de Reforma psiquiátrica y de Salud Mental, rompieron los moldes establecidos y dejaron una huella todavía hoy perceptible, a pesar de los intentos y procesos de reversión involutiva. En este libro se recogen conversaciones con una selección de protagonistas destacados de este proceso que, con su trabajo y dedicación sentaron las ideas, los debates, los discursos, las concepciones, las acciones significativas, los documentos, las realizaciones poliédricas de profundos cambios, que resultaron bases referentes de la Reforma, promoviendo y realizando cambios epistemológicos y en la atención que fueron centrales para construir en el sistema sanitario un modelo de Salud Mental Comunitario.
