Description

The Unknown Edessan Chronicle (1234) It is Syriac historical chronicle, composed in 1234 AD, anonymous (hence “unknown”), and associated with Edessa. Its actual composition was likely done in the region of Edessa (Urhay) or near Melitene, in a Jacobite (Syriac Orthodox) context. Sometimes called the Chronicle of 1234 or Anonymous Chronicle of Edessa. The original manuscript is preserved in British Library MS Add. 14642 (and in fragments elsewhere). The structure of the manuscript begins from Creation, covering biblical, Hellenistic, Roman, Sassanian, Islamic, Crusader, and Mongol-era events and ends in 1234, thus its dating. The scholarly list of the sources of the Unknown Edessan Chronicles (1234) were draw heavily on: Eusebius’ Chronicle, Jacob of Edessa’s Chronicle, Theophilus of Edessa, Michael the Syrian, John of Ephesus, Eastern Christian traditions, and includes chronological biblical tables and synchronisms. Historical Value Extremely important for Crusader and (early Islamic) Syria/Mesopotamia history which is showning the syriac historical sources about that period of time who has a different narrative than the standard Islamic historical sources. It gives local Edessan/Jacobite perspective on Islamic rule and the Crusades. Such as The fall of Edessa (1144), Seljuk and Artuqid rule, Mongol incursions, The Mamluk rise, Church affairs (Jacobite hierarchy, tensions with Melkites and Armenians), and offers unique chronology of Islamic rulers and dating of key battles and events. Why is it “Unknown”? The author does not name himself, and the title “Unknown Edessan” comes from scholars. It was rediscovered in the 19th century by Western scholars studying Syriac chronicles. Editions and Translations Originally edited by Jean-Baptiste Chabot (1860-1948) in (1916, CSCO Syriac and Latin). Who partially translated into French. He also provided Latin translation, notes and headings. The English translation is partial; many sections remain untranslated, but excerpts A. Palmer, The Seventh Century in the West-Syrian Chronicles (Liverpool 1993) translated from Chronicle relevant to 7th century. This is the first time in History were the book (Volume two) was translated completely into English by Romeel Bet Samuel who is a native speaker of Assyrian (Syriac-Aramaic) language.
