Description

PCT.App is an annotated Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) for both practitioners and trainees, which is provided with extensive authors' comments. It tackles the well-known problem of the PCT that the articles of the treaty define only basic matter and the rules of the regulations have become a convoluted mix of legal provisions which is difficult to comprehend in full. The PCT.App, on the other hand, is directed to allow an easy start into the PCT and to find answers quickly. To this end, the structure is based upon the logic of the PCT Applicants Guide, which mainly reflects the chronological processing of the international application. The articles and rules of the PCT are reordered according to this topic-based structure and numerous supplementary overviews are included, all to achieve quicker and more intuitive access. At the same time, all provisions of the PCT are included at least once to allow the reader to dig as deep into the PCT as intended. The commenting of the PCT.App is pursued in a two-column layout, which allows non-disrupted reading of the legal texts in the left column, as well as comments assigned to the individual paragraphs in the right column. The authors’ comments also include numerous references to other parts of the PCT or to external resources. The texts are further provided with markings of important key terms, time limits, fees, languages, and legal consequences. Independent from this printed version, the entire content of the PCT.App is also available as an electronic book implemented as a web browser application (App), which provides the content in colour with an individually adaptable colour layout for the markings. Via the App, users can edit the content, e.g. to show any details hidden by the editors for focusing on most important aspects, or add further related legal provisions from an extensive database. Users can also remove individual authors’ markings or comments and add own ones, have all their adaptations saved in a personal cloud storage, access and navigate the annotated PCT from anywhere via an internet connection, receive automatic updates of legal texts and authors' comments without losing own user comments, and create a printable PDF-file, which includes all self-edited annotations and closely reproduces the layout displayed on the web browser, corresponding to this printed version. The September 2025 Edition has been updated to the legal status valid as of 1 September 2025 and is dedicated for use in the European Qualifying Examination 2026.
