Description

A Personal Journey into a Noble Past Beginning with the author’s own lineage—traced from John Charles Briggs back through three Great Grandparents, two Ralphs and a John to Molly Sherrington of Chorley—this compelling chronicle reveals how one family’s story threads through centuries of English history. Molly ran a shop and boarding house, yet her ancestry reaches deep into a heritage both noble and defiant. The family move to Blackburn in the early 1800s and settle by St. Alban’s Church where Alan is still the organist; over 200 years of unbroken worship here by his family. The Sherringtons of England: Undoubted Kin follows the family from the 12th to the 19th century, uncovering their roles as landholders, clergymen, courtiers, and merchants. They served as Prebendaries eventually Walter becomes The Dean of St. Paul's; others rose to prominence within the London Guilds, and held manors from Wiltshire to Wigan, and London to Lancashire. At the centre stands Sir William Sherrington—Gentleman of the Robes to Henry VIII—entrusted with a Royal Mint at Bristol Castle. His complex life, and that of his friend Thomas Seymour, is re-evaluated here with fresh analysis that challenges the standard accusations of treason during Edward VI’s reign. Many, being of The Haberdashers Guild, trade in Wool and silk and there is a chapter on this vital trade. The narrative traces Sir Henry Sherrington’s acquisition of Lacock Abbey and his grandson Sherrington Talbot’s service in the Civil War. Merchant branches emerge in Wigan and London, culminating in Francis Sherrington of Boothes, a Royalist ally of Lord Derby in the Lancashire campaigns. The struggle continues on through the Penal Times and Sherringtons as Jacobites. The link with Lancashire and London is re-established, lost in the mists of time. Roger, of the Haberdasher’s Guild and his son John of The Girdlers and Vintners die young in London but their progeny spreads out, some returning to the North like Francis of Boothes, a Vintner, a Loyalist in the Civil War but is an avowed "Papist". Woven throughout is a powerful theme: the preservation of the Catholic faith across generations. As Recusants and Royalists, the Sherringtons endured confiscation, persecution, and death—two, Francis of Boothes and his son John, perished in Lancaster Castle. His brother remains in London as a leading light in the Fishmongers Guild, his daughter marrying into a aristocratic family and becomes the Ancestress of The Earls of Veralum. This richly detailed work leads to a poignant connection: between the author—a church organist—and the new Archbishop of Liverpool, John Sherrington. Two lives, generations apart, joined by legacy. Alan, writing the book as a Timeline and a Genealogical Research, offers all the sources he has found in The National Archives and Digital Links to the many books consulted. He is moved by the events he discovers and compares them with his own struggles in life.
