Baleia’s vineyards and olive groves are located on exclusive terroir a stone’s throw from St Sebastian Bay, known as the whale nursery of South Africa. Inspired by the Mediterranean climate and their love of food and superbly crafted wine, the Joubert family has been producing the Baleia range of premium wines and olive oils since 2009. At Baleia the winemaking cycle begins with consistent attention to detail in the vineyards. Making use of technology such as soil probes and, NDVI scanning, one is able to finetune the vineyards through the perfect amount of stress that brings balance and longevity. We believe healthy soil promotes healthy roots, which promotes healthy vines that produce beautifully balanced fruit. When showcasing this wine amongst some of the top winemakers in South Africa, a comment emerged from the discussion: Baleia will have to rewrite the Pinot Noir book with that terroir. Working with such extreme minerality, wind and hard, limestonerich soils requires a refined approach. This is a journey of discovery for us.
