Description

War is not limited to the battlefield. It extends far beyond the clash of armies and the roar of weapons. Its deepest scars are found in the bodies of the wounded, in the minds of survivors, in the tears of displaced families, and in the silent ruins of schools, hospitals, and homes. War uproots, dehumanizes, and impoverishes. It disrupts generations and steals the future from those who had no part in its making. This second volume in the series Abolishing War Forever sheds light on the enduring and often invisible consequences of armed conflicts, from the 20th century's world wars and colonial struggles to the civil wars and geopolitical confrontations of the 21st century. Drawing from historical analysis, economic data, personal testimonies, and human rights perspectives, the book brings together a comprehensive and human-centered reflection on the profound cost of war. The first part focuses on the human cost. It examines the devastating toll in lives lost, bodies injured, and minds traumatized. It gives voice to survivors of forced displacement, sexual violence used as a weapon of war, children recruited as soldiers, and families torn apart by conflict. It explores how war targets not only the enemy but humanity itself, erasing dignity, identity, and the social bonds that hold communities together. Special attention is given to the long-term psychological and intergenerational consequences of trauma, which continue to affect victims, decades after the fighting has ceased. The second part explores the economic consequences of armed conflict, often vast, yet underestimated. In a matter of weeks or months, war can erase decades of economic progress. Vital infrastructure such as roads, energy systems, water networks, hospitals, and schools are destroyed. National economies are destabilized, investment dries up, and local markets collapse. The cost of military operations diverts massive resources away from essential services. War economies give rise to black markets, corruption, and unsustainable foreign aid dependence. This section also analyzes how conflict perpetuates and widens global inequalities, particularly between countries in the Global North and South. In the third part, the book looks toward the future: reconstruction and reconciliation. How do societies rebuild trust, restore justice, and heal after so much loss? What role do transitional justice, truth commissions, and symbolic reparations play in healing wounded nations? The book calls for a paradigm shift away from militarization and toward investment in education, healthcare, cultural revival, and community solidarity. It argues for repurposing military budgets to serve peace and progress, and for promoting international cooperation based on justice, empathy, and shared responsibility. The Human and Economic Consequences of Armed Conflict offers not only a sobering diagnosis, but also a hopeful vision. It reminds us that while war destroys, peace can rebuild. But peace must be nurtured through understanding, compassion, and commitment. It must be built on the recognition of war’s visible and invisible ravages, and on the will to create a different future, where life is valued over power, and dignity over domination. This volume is an essential resource for scholars, peace advocates, policymakers, students, and all those who believe that building peace begins with telling the full truth about the cost of war. Keywords: World Peace, Armed Conflict, War Trauma, Transitional Justice, Human Dignity, Peacebuilding, Post-War Reconstruction, Economic Consequences, Global Inequality, Peace Education, Social Repair
