Château Tour de Capet SaintÉmilion Grand Cru is a deep redruby in colour. The wine has a fruity nose with notes of ripe red fruit. On the palate it is open, sharp and wellbalanced between berries and pleasant hints of wooden cigar boxes.The twelve hectares of vines lie slightly lower down the slope from the CapetGuillier vineyard. Soils here contain more clay and silt and thus are slightly more fertile, which results in an open, more forward style of wine. Crop thinning in the spring and leaf plucking in the summer ensures the fruit ripens evenly. Yields from the 30 year old vines are 35 hectolitres per hectare.The 2010 vintage is a robust wine resulting from aggressive and extreme conditions. Very high early winter rainfall allowed for a reserve of dampness to build up in the soil. Late spring water replenishment in June rather than April and ‘yoyo‘ June conditions delayed flowering. A parched dry summer led to strong tannins developing in the grapes. A product of drought, the grapes experienced an irregular sugar buildup in summer and a sudden reconcentration at the finish. Cooler AugustSeptember minimum temperatures resulted in a higher acidity in this vintage compared to 2009.After gentle destemming, the berries were dropped uncrushed into concrete vats for the fermentation process. Temperaturecontrolled alcoholic fermentation took place for 17 days, followed by 20 days of maceration. Malolactic fermentation occurred from the beginning of November to the end of December. The wine aged for 10 months, 30% in concrete vats, 15% in new French oak barrels (medium toast) and 55% in barrels of one and two years old.
