Gallons of ink have been spilt over "Kind Of Blue" since its release. It has been routinely hailed as the greatest jazz album ever and as defining a whole era; and it has survived both the slightly disillusioning comment by one of the players on the session that it represented just another ordinary day at the office, and the attempts of “revisionist” critics to dismiss it as merely superior mood music. All one really needs to settle the question is to put the album on and listen without prejudice. Envy those who are hearing “So What” and “Freddie Freeloader” or the prescient outlines of “Flamenco Sketches” for the very first time. Most real jazz fans will wear out, lose or give away at least one or two copies in their lifetime, and probably keep a spare one in the car. Debunking controversies aside, this is a record that gives “essential” its proper meaning.
