Description
Shiver Past is a monograph collection of visual art by Alaska-based artist Jason Custer exploring themes of subjectivity, memory, consciousness, cognition and time. It is part 3 of a 4 volume series including companion volumes Serious Nostalgia, Landscaping Yesterday, and Perfect Window. Custer lives on an island near Alaska's capitol city of Juneau. He works in dreamy, nostalgic imagery influenced by post-impressionism, primitive photography, the symbolist movement in art, post-structuralism, narrative figuration, regional landscape painting, and the shoegaze musical genre. Custer was formally trained as an art historian at the University of Delaware, where he focused on philosophy of aesthetics, early film, post-impressionism, and the symbolist movement in art. He worked as a silent film researcher in the archives of the Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman House, and the Library of Congress. In the early 2000s he painted largely in neo-expressionist styles. Custer has released a substantial amount of music under various pseudonyms (such as Unorganized Borough of Alaska), and is the author of numerous works of fiction and non-fiction, including the as-yet-unproduced television show Icy Hibernaculum. He is an avid adult figure skater and cross-country skier.
