Description

The book presents a review of all four European extinct Ice Age rhinoceroses going back 866.000 years (Marine Isotope Stages 21-2). It focuses on the German Rhine Graben of Central Europe which was the most important North-South migration channel for big game followed by top predators, lions, and spotted hyenas. Neanderthal human and camp remains of the past 220.000 years prove the hunting of migrating herds. Big game migrated seasonally more than 1000 kilometers along the Graben. Rhinos evolved in new subspecies as a reaction to climate and landscape change stress. Ice Age spotted hyenas killed rhinos and transported body pieces to their cubs at their so-called den sites. They created large guilt bone accumulations. Three rhinos adapted by head change for more bottom feeding and survived in the Mediterranean-influenced climate longer than believed. The final subspecies of woolly rhino was the last rhino survivor with extinction 14.000 years ago.
