Science deals with measurable analog realities. Although modern seismic data once recorded and processed is mostly in digital form, the physical properties of elastic waves in the field that produced such data are always analogous in nature. For that reason, the study of field parameter designs should always stay very close to such analogous principles. Prospects in the field vary greatly together with the ever-changing exploration objectives in differing conditions. For such reason there are no “universal” or any “standard” field designs and techniques that fit all prospects. Successful field design in one prospect cannot and should not be used in another prospects no matter how physically close or how similar the conditions might be. Everything around us is ANALOG! That is certainly the case for the geological half space below the surface. It is wise to look at the science of applied seismology, from its original analog nature and point of view. The fundamental purpose of applied seismology is to provide a seismic image that is accurate in resolution and in depth of the sought-after geological targets. Such effort is distributed into three branches namely field acquisition, data processing and geological interpretation. Coordination between these three stages of expertise is essential for the success of resolving the exploration objectives. Of these three branches the most expensive and consequently the most important for its influence upon the other two is the field acquisition requiring the lion’s share of the cost and deserve increasing scientific devotion. Sadly, such field acquisition also happens to be the most neglected today compared to data processing and interpretation. It involves harsh life in remote, uninvited places, isolation with long work hours per day, and sacrifice in living conditions, not exactly an attractive choice of a career for a young graduate to choose. This book intends to detail some of the scientific aspects of this neglected science in the hope of encouraging graduates to choose their career in this otherwise adventurous, challenging and scientifically truly rewarding career.
