Description

The first Spry left Cornwall and landed in the U.S. in 1831, when there were 24 states and Andrew Jackson was in the middle of his first term as President. William Lloyd Garrison published the first issue of his Abolitionist newspaper “The Liberator” that January, and Nat Turner led a slave rebellion in August. The first building and loan association in the U.S. was organized in Pennsylvania, and the first steam locomotive in the U.S. made a run from Albany to Schenectady. That first Spry settled in Pennsylvania coal country, to be joined later by a brother and a sister. Their families merged with families from Somerset and Wales and Sweden, and with a family that arrived from Ireland five years before the first Spry. Most of them were farmers. One started a hardware store, and one ran a bank. Eleven fought in the Civil War, 36 in the First World War, and at least 80 in World War II. Three were submarine officers. There were many engineers and preachers. One struck out Babe Ruth. This is the story of the Spry family and their spread from Pennsylvania.
