The main function of the exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) is to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) produced during the combustion process. NOx is produced when the nitrogen and oxygen contained in the air-fuel mixture combine at high combustion temperatures. Exhaust gas recirculation valves are installed in all modern diesel engines and a growing number of petrol engines, which reduces fuel consumption.
