My name is Martyn Perry and no, I am not related to the world-famous, super rich and extremely attractive lady called Katy, with whom I share a surname. That said, if I was able to trace back both my family history and hers, I would undoubtedly arrive at the first set of Perry’s and, by definition, would find that Perry couple Number 1, would subsequently lead back down to Katy herself. However surprised as I might be, placing a photograph of Katy and myself side by side, the viewer would be left in absolutely no doubt of any possible familial, or even remote biological link – one reason she does so well in the entertainment business and I …er…do not. Fred, of tennis (and shirt) fame, Matthew a.k.a. Chandler Bing, Linda of Four Non-Blondes and sixty other famous Perrys are testament to the fact that I belong to a lineage that is both gifted and diverse. Among us are brain surgeons, national cricket and soccer players, ministers, professional golfers, politicians, sports personalities, artists and TV presenters. Us Perrys have gone places – let me tell you. I am proud to be a Perry. Whilst I cannot claim to hold as famous a position amongst my extended family, I hold an acerbic view of the world that I’m about to enjoy sharing with you. Should you find that my sense of wit does not find accord with yours, you have sixty-three of my brethren to argue with before you get to me – and some of them, especially the American football players, are very big! My life as a Perry has, despite the lack of world fame, been full of triumphs and disasters, but ultimately fulfilling enough for me to pen these words. You never know, I might even get my distant cousin Katy to attend the book launch. Enjoy the yarn.
