Selected Iconography: 1990-2025 (LG Williams Catalogue Raisonné)

Selected Iconography: 1990-2025 is a visual compendium of images that have shaped LG Williams’s paintings over the past 35 years. This extensive collection gathers source material from four major bodies of work: The Military and Yellow Paintings, The SoCal Mid-Rise Paintings, and Set The Record Wrong—offering insight into the evolution of Williams’s provocative artistic vocabulary. Since the late 1990s, Williams has amassed an expansive archive of visual references—photographs, digital imagery, and appropriated graphics—a significant number of which have found their way onto his canvases and texts. The book traces how these images were transformed into artworks, revealing an ongoing dialogue between pop culture, mass media, and the artist’s imaginative visual aesthetics. At its core, Selected Iconography is a window into Williams’s creative process and soul. Pages juxtapose military insignias with sun-drenched Los Angeles landscapes, found imagery with hand-altered compositions, and high-art references with the everyday detritus of visual culture. The collection highlights the artist’s distinctive method of remixing and recontextualizing imagery, a practice that underpins his critical approach to image-making. Through its sheer diversity and depth, Selected Iconography serves not only as an archive of source material but as an independent artwork in its own right. Much like Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project, Aby Warburg's Atlas, the Mahabharata, the Bible, or The Odyssey, Williams’s book extends beyond mere documentation, offering a fragmented yet cohesive portrait of an artist relentlessly interrogating the visual world around him. LG Williams is a Los Angeles-based artist and recently the Endowed University Instructor at The Academy of Art University; Robert Hughes Distinguished Visual Artist-In-Residence at The Lodge in Hollywood, CA; and the Emmy Hennings Distinguished Professor at D(D).DDDD University. LG has exhibited in various national and international venues, including The Internet Pavilion of La Biennale Di Venezia, and has appeared in Artforum, The New York Times, Times Literary Supplement, The Guardian, Japan Times, Los Angeles Times, La Stampa, Bookforum, Purple Diary, Mousse Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail among others. PCP Press is an independent publisher of avant-garde books and insurgent authors. Founded in 1990 in San Francisco at a time when transgressive and sometimes esoteric international art books had a difficult time making their way into the wider American marketplace, over the past three decades PCP has grown into a consistent publisher of books, special editions and rare publications from an array of the world’s most respected authors and cultural institutions — including Raymond Pettibon, Dave Hickey, Wayne Thiebaud, Bryan Reynolds, David Hawkes, Shepard Fairey, LG Williams, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, and Luscerne Kunstpanorama. # # # # #
