THE BARRON PARK PAPERS: Volume II: Memorialist

On the evening of January 8, 1986, I received a life-altering visit from Mr. Andy Doty, a representative from Stanford University. His news was shocking and would soon send ripples of concern throughout Barron Park, Palo Alto. The very next day, local newspapers reported the discovery of toxic chemicals—TCA, TCE, Freon 113, PCE, Dichloropropene, and other solvents—found in our wells and aquifers. This revelation sparked urgent concern among residents. As the reality of the situation set in, it quickly escalated from a neighborhood issue to a statewide crisis. The severity of the contamination prompted attention all the way to Congress. Reflecting on the implications for our community, it became clear that we needed a proactive response. We had to develop a plan to confront this alarming reality. What unfolded was nothing short of monumental. The situation led to the establishment of one of the most complicated Superfund sites in the United States: the Hillview-Porter site. Over fourteen companies were brought into the cleanup effort, including Stanford University, their landlord. The scale of the response highlighted the significance of the issue and the need for collaboration. Meanwhile, I found myself stepping into a volunteer role as the president of the local neighborhood association. When I agreed to take on this responsibility, I had no idea what challenges lay ahead! This position doesn’t come with a paycheck, and it can create tension with some neighbors while earning support from others. Balancing this significant time commitment with my responsibilities as a parent of two young boys was no small feat. In the midst of this crisis, a collection of documents began to emerge. It contains thousands of newspaper articles, letters, phone calls, personal notes, and more, all narrating the challenges faced by the Barron Park Association during these trying times. These records highlight the incredible power of community activism and the collective efforts to address critical issues that affected our neighborhood. Each document serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of residents who worked together to bring attention to pressing concerns. By preserving these materials, we not only honor our past but also inspire future generations to engage in community efforts and advocate for meaningful change. Looking back, it’s clear that the Barron Park crisis was more than just a local issue; it was a catalyst for community action. The lessons learned from this experience continue to resonate, reminding us of the importance of activism and collaboration in the face of adversity. Together, we can ensure that the spirit of our community remains strong and that we are always ready to advocate for a better future for Barron Park!
