Description

The Cyprus Crisis of 1974 started with a bloody coup d' etat of the Greek Junta of Ioannides against Makarios, the elected President and Archibishop of Cyprus. Cyprus was put under the control of Greece, de facto union after the coup, Turkey was not ready to accept such a development that altered the balance of power between Greece and Turkey and prepared for an invasion on 20 July 1974 in order to impose a bizonal federation in Cyprus or a de facto partition. Makarios in his desperation that he had been violently deposed by the conspiratorial Invisible Dictator Demetrios Ioannides, naively believed that Turkey would proceed to a police operation of limited military extent to restore the status quo ante in Cyprus and him as President. He fell in the Turkish trap and betrayed his country and hellenism, since Turkey invaded Cyprus to cancel the de facto union with Greece and obtain full control of 37% of the island for her geopolitical objectives.
