David Bowie fans who claimed he was a fan of Jacques Brel at the start of his career have got it all wrong, just like those who persist in talking about his minnow eyes or his “Berlin Trilogy produced by Brian Eno”. In truth, Bowie first became acquainted with Brel’s sons through the voice of Scott Walker, who recorded no less than eight of them on his first three albums. But above all, David realised their potential when he saw the musical “Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris” in London in 1968, with his girlfriend Hermione Farthingale. In the show, and on the record that David Bowie is said to have kept for the rest of his life, Brel’s songs were performed by Elly Stone, Shawn Elliott, Alice Whitheld and Mort Shuman.
