Strange Boutique, a musical gem that emerged from the vibrant Washington DC punk scene, created a work that still fascinates with their debut album "The Loved One" in 1991. Founded by Monica Richards, Danny Ingram and Fred "Freak" Smith, who had previously shaped the local hardcore scene with bands such as Madhouse, Youth Brigade and Beefeater, Strange Boutique showed an ambitious departure from puristic punk early on to a more melodic, ethereal sound. With bassist Steve Willett on board, a band formed that combined the raw energy of post-punk with a new, almost dreamy musicality. The live performances of Strange Boutique were legendary: a synthesis of Fred's untamed guitar playing, Monica's charismatic stage presence, and the unstoppable rhythm section of Danny and Steve. With their debut album, Strange Boutique proved that they were more than just another relic of the DC punk scene.
