At some point in everyone’s life I guess you start wondering what you’re going to leave behind for future generations to have. Unless your famous, extremely wealthy, or have made a significant impact on history, chances are you’re not going to be put in the history books. Sure the easy way to make your mark on history is to become an axe murderer or something of the like, which doesn’t seem the way I would like to be remembered. Another way is to put yourself into the history books by being the writer. After all history is in the eyes of the beholder, isn’t it? One more thing you begin to think about when you become older is your roots. I started researching my family tree only to find out how hard and expensive information is to come by. The thought hit me, it would be nice to pick up a book and read about my lineage. After reading what other Genealogists have done, I couldn’t help but notice the same old pattern. The focus was on the family tree and most of what I have seen is just hand me downs usually put together very haphazardly. Some other things stick out to me also, such as the grasping at straws approach. What I mean by this is not doing the research because the information looks good. Every name should connect with someone in the tree or there should be some kind of hard evidence to support using a name in your family tree. Another thing that I wondered about when I seen a name on a lonely family tree is; who was that person or what kind of life did they lead? In this book I have done by best to keep everything as accurate as possible. You will also find the family trees like in all other pedigrees, but when available I have gathered stories about the individuals. Now keep in mind like I said before History is in the beholder. So if you’re a family member of mine and you see a story you don’t agree with, don’t come crying to me. I write it like I perceived it to be. I am a Smith, but you will notice that even though I started from the Smith tree, it leads itself into other trees. This book will venture into families both maternal and paternal. I will try to keep all surnames together. At the end of each family I will add some blank pages so; one day when you look yourself up in this book you can add some details about your life. I dedicate this book to my boys, Harold, and Phillip Smith. I hope it brings both of you a feeling of calmness and belonging knowing you belong to a long, old and vast family of extraordinary individuals. I Love You…
