Description

The Coroner for West Surrey stated: "There is no doubt this poor man was diabolically murdered." He added: “In my experience, I never came across a more horrid case than this." The verdict of the inquest jury was: "Wilful murder by a person or persons unknown." In the late evening hours of January 12, 1888, in the tiny, historic village of Byfleet, Surrey, U.K., James Chuter, a 28-year-old grocer, entered the locked residence that he shared with his father, George Chuter--a 67-year old retired carpenter and innkeeper. In the pitch dark, James stumbled over a dead body, sprawled on the kitchen floor. The body was that of his father, George, lying in a huge pool of blood. George had been horribly mutilated. His head had been bashed to a pulp, multiple times, with his own poker. His throat had been slashed from ear-to-ear with his own carving knife, down to his spinal vertebrae. George was almost decapitated. Only the knot in his cut cravat had prevented his head from being completely severed from his torso. The Surrey Police found no clues at the crime scene that indicated the identity of the perpetrator (or perpetrators.) Thus, it was a perfect crime. There were no eyewitnesses. George was alone in his cottage when he was murdered. His residence was locked. The police found no visible signs of forcible entry. George's son, James, had an air-tight alibi for the time of the murder. A likeable bloke, George Chuter had no known enemies. Police never found a viable suspect--or even a person of interest. The police were utterly baffled, and they remained so, despite a long investigation. There was no credible motive apparent for the crime--only groundless speculation. The Byfleet Murder has remained unsolved for 136 years. It has never been re-investigated by any law enforcement agency or private detective. The murder and mutilation have never been the subject of a book in print. That is, until now. Starr is the first author to re-investigate The Byfleet Murder & Mutilation since the Surrey Constabulary abandoned the case. One hundred and thirty-six years after the fact, Starr has now solved this mysterious crime--first, by meticulously re-examining all crime scene evidence known in the 19th Century; and then, by revealing 'new,' authentic, physical crime scene evidence that still survives in Byfleet to the present day. [SPOILER ALERT! BELOW] In this first volume of the series A Trail of Blood, American writerMark Starr takes an in depth look at all evidence known in the 19th Century about this enigmatic murder/mutilation. Then, he finds 'new' physical evidence that still exists in 2024--evidence that was never seen by the Surrey Constabulary, the Coroner, or the British press in 1888 (or thereafter.). This 'new' evidence reveals that the murder and the mutilation of George Chuter were far more complex crimes than ever imagined by anyone in 1888. Starr reveals physical crime scene evidence of a ritualistic sacrifice committed by a hermetic, homicidal, religious cult of three killers who worked in concert. Starr's investigation into the Byfleet Murder will continue in Volume 2--in which he will reveal yet more physical evidence in Byfleet--evidence that corroborates all the evidence he presents in Volume 1. Inexplicably, he also finds 'new,' physical evidence that suggests a link to the Whitechapel Murders that commenced in London's East End seven months later, during 'the Autumn of Terror.' Starr will investigate a possible evidentiary connection between the Byfleet Murder and the Whitechapel Murders in a later volume of the series A Trail of Blood. In Volume 2, Starr will reveal trophy photographs taken by these killers. From these photographs, Starr is able to positively identify one of the three killers.
