Description

Veterinary Reproduction is a branch of veterinary science which plays an important role in protecting animal reproductive health, preventing and controlling reproductive diseases, and promoting animal husbandry. Mammalian animals reproduce through sexual reproduction,, following fertilization, an embryo is formed, and animal tissues organize into organ systems; some animals may also undergo incomplete or complete metamorphosis Animal reproduction is necessary for the survival of a species. In the animal kingdom, there are innumerable ways that species reproduce. The objective of animal breeding are as follows: To increase animal yield, to improve the desirable quality of animal produce and to produce disease-resistant varieties of animals. Most animals are diploid organisms, meaning that their body (somatic) cells are diploid and haploid reproductive (gamete) cells are produced through meiosis. During sexual reproduction, the haploid gametes of the male and female individuals of a species combine in a process called fertilization. Typically, the small, motile male sperm fertilizes the much larger, sessile female egg. This process produces a diploid fertilized egg called a zygote. Infertility is a temporary disturbance in reproductive function wherein the animal cannot become pregnant. Normally an animal with a healthy reproductive function should calve every 12-14 months. Infertility causes economic losses to the farmers due to delay in maturity, calving and milk production. The specific subjects are covered on the basis of body systems, with diagrams or photographs and illustrations. The book included chapters on Cattle, Horses, Camels, Sheep, Goats, Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Poultry Infertility and Artificial Insemination. The main purpose of the book is to point out the interest of domestic animals reproduction and the progress in this field and to clear its importance in veterinary medicine. The book is concisely and clearly written and intended for veterinarians and clinicians and for people directly involved in animal health, management and breeding. It would also be of value to post and undergraduate veterinary students.
