Un trésor pour les amateurs d'art africain Les Salampasu habitent dans la province du Kasaï oriental en République démocratique du Congo. Tout au long de leur histoire, ils ont pu résister à la domination de peuples voisins Luba, Chokwe et Lunda. Finalement, ils ont dû accepter la domination des autorités coloniales Belges. Ce peuple Salampasu n'a pas de pouvoir central. Chaque communauté villageoise connait sa société de guerriers qui la protège contre des hostilités. Les guerriers organisent également des spectacles masqués. Les guerriers âgés sont les propriétaires et gardiens de ces masques. Ils donnent la permission aux jeunes hommes de danser avec les masques. Les masques Salampasu ont une conception formelle très reconnaissable. Ils ont un grand front bombé, le nez large et plat, des yeux enfoncés et une bouche ouverte aux dents limées. En plus, il existe une grande variation dans la manière dont les visages sont peints ou recouverts de métal. Ainsi, ces masques obtiennent une expression dramatique, voire agressive, qui redonne vie aux ancêtres guerriers. Au total, la collection Lanfranchi se compose d'une cinquantaine de masques. Dans cet ouvrage, chaque masque est décrit et analysé. Ceci permet ensuite montrer les similitudes ou les différences mutuelles. Ensuite, des attributions hypothétiques peuvent être faites quant à savoir si certains masques ont été réalisés par le même sculpteur ou proviennent du même atelier.
