It was based on the design of a GMC truck, with an additional drive system enabling it to move both on land and in water. It had a characteristic flat bow that made it easier to float. The DUKW was widely used during sea landings, land operations and for transport in flooded areas. Its ability to move on water and land made it a very versatile vehicle in combat conditions. The vehicle was powered by a high-power gasoline engine, which allowed it to reach a maximum speed of approximately 80km/h on land and 10km/h in water.
