From the Introduction: By the Monorail: Wuppertal Germany’s Historic Schwebebahn at 120 focuses primarily on life around the historic monorail’s eastern section; the part that has run over the Wuppertal River since 1903 when the line was completed in its current form. The original section opened in 1901 in Vohwinkel, operating primarily above city streets and was covered in the first book of this two-part series By The Monorail: A Day in the Life of Germany’s Historic Wuppertal Schwebebahn. A majority of the pictures are of the Schwebebahn as is traverses above the Wupper River from the Zoo/Stadion station to its eastern terminus at Oberbarmen/Berliner Platz. The photographs appear in the chronological order in which they were taken and the chapters denote the dates when this photography took place. In most cases multiple photographs will appear under a single heading or description so as to maintain the flow of the narrative and replicate as much as possible the experience of the author as he photographed the line from various stations, from the trains, and on foot. In some cases, certain landmarks are pointed out so as to give visitors to the city a reference point in their guidebooks. When possible both street and trackside views of the same areas are depicted but in those instances where walking was either untenable or the line too far away, only pictures from inside the trains or their stations were taken.
