This book is comprised of 18 letters, dating November 2014 to March 2016, written to two young daughters by their father to explain letters he had written to them twelve years earlier, November 2002 to November 2005, to prepare them for something traumatic that would affect their lives forever. In 1999 their father divorced their mother and left the two girls to her primary care, not so unusual, but in 2005 he surrendered professorial career, relinquished all but a few possessions, changed his English name to a foreign one, and expatriated to a faraway land, promising his daughters in a torrent of letters, “I go to prepare a place for you.” The question then-young children would have asked, the question lingering as those girls have grown to be young women, while daddy continues living faraway, is why he left them, why he went to live half way across the world. Why? Did he depart for himself, selfishly considering no one else? Or has he always loved his daughters in a rare and uncommon way that only this father—this man of contemplative, mystic, and monastic proclivities—could begin to know to do? Let the literary letters in this volume, letters to two young women addressing earlier letters to then-young daughters, answer once and for all as far as a man’s truth can be told. And may this father’s answer speak for other fathers, perhaps too some mothers, who resonate with this truth and can respond “Behold!”
