Agates are beautiful and interesting natural curiosities found throughout the world. This is a book about agates that are found in Minnesota and surrounding areas and named after Lake Superior. Agates are found in many different varieties with different appearances. The most common variety of agate is called banded agate and consists of concentric lines that sometimes are said to resemble a fortification. So banded agates are sometimes called fortification agates. However, in addition to banded agates there are other beautiful and interesting varieties that are generally described according to their appearance. So, there are tube agates, eye agates, moss agates, and other varieties in addition to the more common banded agates. These varieties are the subject of this book and are what the book refers to as the “other” Lake Superior agates. The book begins by discussing banded agates and their formation in detail and then proceeds by devoting chapters to each of the “other” varieties of agates. Whether a person is a new or experienced agate collector they will find a wealth of information in this book which includes over 650 spectacular agate photographs, closeups, and discussion relating to the possible way in which all the varieties formed. The book includes 383 full color pages and doubles the size of the third edition. It includes all material that was part of the first three editions plus over 300 spectacular new professional agate photographs never seen before. Collecting Lake Superior agates began to change profoundly in 2003 as a result of publication of the first edition of this book. Prior to that time most, but not all, collectors focused on banded agates. The book began a revolution in Lake Superior Agate collecting that has accelerated through the second and third editions in 2006 and 2009. The new edition offered here takes the identification and appreciation of the many unique “other” agates to an entirely new level. Even if you are not an agate collector or plan to become one you will enjoy the spectacular complex patterns and colors of agates! The book will appeal to young and old alike, new collectors just starting out, and experienced collectors!
